My Journey to Self-Discovery: 3 Lessons for Creating the Life You Desire

In 2021, I was facing my boss, about to do something life-changing. After more than 20 years as an industrial chemist, I was handing in my resignation.

I had decided: I would no longer be controlled by the constraints of a large organisation and a typical Monday to Friday work week. Instead, I chose to fulfill my deep-seated desire to help others, every single day.

So, I bought a bongo van and embarked on a journey of self-discovery. Over the next twelve months, this voyage transformed me in ways I never expected.

I took time for me. My mission was clear: own my own bullshit and navigate any hurdles necessary to get where I wanted to be. I learned many lessons on this journey, and three stood out as the most pivotal.

1. Change Starts with You

Change is a natural part of life, as everything around us is in a constant state of transformation. Yet, personal change is something many of us resist. We cling to the familiar, even when it no longer serves us, because the unknown is daunting.

I had a profound realisation: I needed to stop tolerating my own discomfort just to please others.

For too long, I had taken on the role of “Ms. Fix It” - saying the right things, doing the right things, keeping the peace. But at what cost? If others desired change, they needed to take responsibility for their own growth. I shed the persona of “Ms. Fix It ” and stopped trying to please everyone.

And here’s the truth… when we change ourselves, we become beacons of inspiration for others searching for their own path.

2. Look Inward and Own Your Truth

Self-reflection is a crucial step in the journey of change. It means observing your thoughts, feelings and actions - not to judge yourself, but to gain insight and direction.

I went through a raw and difficult period of self-reflection - shedding tears, moments of rage and despair. Why? Because for years, I had shifted blame onto others, refusing to accept responsibility for my own flaws.

Real transformation only happens when you stop pointing fingers and start owning your truth. I had to summon my inner strength, stand with some backbone and acknowledge that it was my bullshit that I needed to address.

I stopped seeking external validation. I stopped expecting others to change. I began to make decisions about my life with honesty, maturity and clarity.

3. Be Led by Your Soul

As humans, we operate under the influence of both logic and soul-driven change.

If I had allowed pure logic to govern my decisions, I would not be where I am today. I would have followed my Dad’s well-meaning advice and stayed in my “safe, stable” job. I would have continued to prioritise others’ expectations over my own happiness.

Instead, I learned to listen to the guidance of my soul. It wasn’t loud or forceful - it was a deep, undeniable feeling of alignment. A knowing. It showed up in my heart, guiding me toward my freedom.

Following this inner guidance wasn’t easy, but it was worth it. It’s a journey that demands courage, self-compassion and a willingness to embrace the unknown. If you listen closely, you’ll find your soul is speaking to you too.

Are You on the Right Path?

By embracing these lessons, I’ve created the freedom and life I once only dreamed of.

  • My second book, Quiet Achievers – How to Be Seen and Heard So You Stand Out, is published (so excited!).

  • I now coach others through my business, Integrated Soul, helping them break through their barriers and design the future they truly desire.

And now, here I am in front of you. For whatever reason, you found this article at the right time.

I figured it out the long way—the hard way—with plenty of mistakes along the path. My mission now? To help you create the life you desire, without the struggle.

So, I ask you:

  • Are you truly where you want to be?

  • Are you ready to own your truth and take action?

Take Five Minutes Today to Reflect

What’s one area of your life where you’re tolerating something that no longer serves you? Write it down.

Then ask yourself: What’s one small step I can take this week to start changing it?
